The definition of success and the right strategies to take to get there are different for every individual. The articles included here are meant to provide resources and examples to help early career investigators from an array of disciplines at a variety of stages in their pre-tenure. Most of them are related to research development and more specifically to developing proposals for early career awards. 2017 UNM NSF CAREER Proposal Workshop

On March 21, 2017, the Faculty Research Development Office and ADVANCE at UNM hosted an NSF CAREER Proposal Workshop in the Ortega Hall Reading Room. Untenured, tenure track faculty from across campus came to learn the ins and outs of what worked for recent NSF CAREER awardees from UNM.

So You Want to Win a CAREER Award

The NSF Early Faculty Development (CAREER) Program Award is the most sought-after recognition a new faculty member can receive. Besides being an impressive addition to the recipient’s resume, the award gives major bragging rights to his or her department and institution. As soon as most new assistant professors move into their offices and boot up their computers, they are expected to begin work on their CAREER proposals—and if they don’t make it on the first attempt they are expected to keep plugging away until they either win the award or are no longer eligible.

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine have developed this report published in 2017 to help define and shape the direction of STEM research experiences for undergraduates. Incorporating undergraduates into research is a beneficial learning experience for the student and can also have long term benefits for the researcher and the scientific discipline. One of the most prominent opportunities for undergraduate research has been through the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, but many other funders (large and small) have contributed to the opportunities available. This online book is interactive and will provide access to a range of information that may be relevant to your research plan that could include research experiences for undergraduate students.
