Visiting Scholars Program
Eligibility
- Scholars must be social scientists who are at least 3 years beyond the Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree
- Individuals are allowed a maximum of two visits to the Foundation as a Visiting Scholar—the second visit may not occur within 7 years of the first visit.
Funding Priorities
- Research carried out by Visiting Scholars constitutes an important part of the Foundation’s ongoing effort to analyze and understand the complex and shifting nature of social and economic life in the United States. Specific funding priorities of the Foundation include:
- Behavioral Economics
- Future of Work
- Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration
- Social, Political and Economic Inequality
- Immigration and Immigrant Integration
- Improving Education and Reducing Inequality in the United States
- Decision Making and Human Behavior in Context

Additional Information
- The Russell Sage Foundation's Visiting Scholars Program provides a unique opportunity for select scholars in the social, economic and behavioral sciences to pursue their research and writing while in residence at the Foundation’s New York headquarters.
- Scholars are provided with an office at the Foundation, research assistance, computer and library facilities, and supplemental salary support of up to 50 percent of their academic year salary when unavailable from other sources (up to a maximum of $125,000 for the full academic year, or up to a maximum of $62,500 for a half year). Only early career scholars within 7 years of completing a PhD, whose home institution does not provide sabbatical within the first 7 years, may request more than 50% of their academic salary when unavailable from other sources, up to a maximum of $125,000. Child care subsidies are also available. Scholars who reside outside the greater New York City area are also provided with a partially-subsidized apartment near the Foundation offices.
- Visiting Scholar positions begin September 1 and run through June 30th.
- Invited full proposals are due Nov. 17, 2022.
