Behavioral Science Track Award for Rapid Transition (B/Start)(R03) PAR-19-310
Eligibility
- The B/START R03 is intended for
- recently-independent investigators with substantial expertise in affective, cognitive or behavioral science or established investigators who are using behavioral science approaches to SUD for the first time or
- established investigators in the fields of SUD research or in the affective, cognitive or behavioral sciences if they are applying behavioral approaches to SUD-relevant research questions for the first time.
- To be eligible for a B/START award, the PD/PI may not have been designated previously as the PD/PI on a NIDA-funded research project in which cognitive or behavioral science approaches were central to the research design; exceptions are R36 Research Dissertation Award, R15 Research Enhancement Award (including AREA and REAP), and training or career development awards (e.g. National Research Service Award, K award, F award, or National Science Foundation fellowship).
- To be eligible for a B/START award, the PD/PI must be fully independent, i.e. supported by his/her institution directly, as an independent investigator, and not through another, more senior investigator.
Funding Priorities
- This FOA supports studies that apply affective, cognitive and behavioral science approaches to research questions relevant to substance use disorders (SUD).
- NIDA aims to seed innovative affective, cognitive and behavioral hypotheses, models, and methods in preclinical and clinical SUD research.
- Studies supported by B/START are expected to produce a coherent set of preliminary findings that would inform the design of a more complete study and serve as preliminary data supporting feasibility or scientific rationale in an R01, R21 or similar application.
